Courses on International Investment Law

The courses on international investment law are a special offer to students particularly interested in international economic law. In two intensive block courses (held in German) the students learn the theory and practice of international investment law and get an insight into the current developments of this highly relevant area of international economic law.

Wintersemester 2018/2019

International investment law I – standards of protection

The course International investment law I (Jun.-Prof. Dr. Scheu) will be held from 10 am to 5 pm at the following dates: Fri, 19.10 (2.101); Sat, 20.10 (VIIa); Fri, 26.10 (2.101); Sat, 27.10 (VIIa)

The students first get to know the system of private protection in international. The course focuses on the actors involved in the system of international investment protection, the definition of investment and the scope of protection offered by different standards such as expropriation, non-discrimination or fair and equitable treatment.

International investment law II – investor-state dispute settlement

The course International investment law II (Dr. Markert) will be held from 10 am to 5 pm at the following dates: Thu, 22.11 (2.101); Fri, 23.11 (2.101); Sat, 24.11 (Library Institute of Air Law and Space Law)

The course gives an insight on the highly relevant system of investor-state dispute settlement. Focusing on current practice, students get to know the principles of international investment arbitration and learn by what procedural means foreign investors can enforce their rights provided by international investment agreements. In addition to general features of international investment arbitration, the participants study the arbitration procedure under the rules of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Furthermore, ongoing reforms of the investor-state dispute settlement mechanism is discussed.

Advanced Course on ICSID Arbitration

The Advanced Course on ICSID Arbitration provides a detailed and practical insight on investment arbitrations conducted under ICSID rules. The Course will be taught in English by Mr. Francisco Abriani, who is a Legal Counsel at the ICSID Secretariat with extensive experience in the conduct of arbitral proceedings under ICSID rules. The course complements the courses on International Investment Law I and II and is aimed at students with previous exposure to international arbitration, doctoral candidates and interested practitioners.

The Course will be held from 10 am to 5 pm at the following dates: Fri, 25.01. (SSC, room 2.101); Sa, 26.01. (Main Building, room XIa); Fri, 01.02. (SSC, room 2.101); Sa, 02.02 (IILCC).

Limited places are available to students and young practitioners not enrolled at the University of Cologne. Study credits

Exams taken in international investment law are eligible for study credits for students enrolled in Schwerpunktbereich 6 (Internationales Privat- Wirtschafts- und Verfahrensrecht), Schwerpunktbereich 9 (Völker- und Europarecht) or the master programs „Wirtschaftsrecht (LL.M.)“ and „im Ausland graduierte Juristinnen und Juristen (LL.M.)“.
